Why 60% of Newly Promoted Managers Fail Within Their First Year

Life can be exhausting, especially with a family. Juggling school runs, traffic, kids' moods, and homework can be overwhelming. Adding a problematic manager to the mix makes it even tougher, but I often sympathize with managers thrust into positions without training, self-development, or mentorship. Approximately 60% of newly promoted managers fail within their first year (Ashkenas, 2015), indicating a significant error in selecting candidates for advanced management roles. Here are three common reasons for this failure.

Negative Self-Talk

Avoid negative self-talk. As a new leader, mistakes are inevitable. When negative thoughts arise, detach emotionally; otherwise, it hinders your leadership. Shift your energy and maintain a positive mindset, whether through inspirational audio or videos. Positive self-talk supports you, while negativity is destructive and undermines your leadership potential.

Justifying Your Behavior and Blaming Others

Do you struggle to admit when you’re wrong? An article I read recounted a leader who blamed others for his actions. The author reflected, "The excuses people make never cease to amaze me.” Leadership is about creating an environment that helps individuals reach their potential and achieve company goals, but the buck stops with you as the leader, and you must accept responsibility for everything that happens under your watch.

Lacking Emotional Intelligence

Leaders must have emotional intelligence to succeed. A calm leader who assesses stressful situations is more effective than one who resorts to shouting. Leaders with self-control stay clear-headed during crises and maintain emotional balance. Those who manage multiple demands while focusing on group goals are the most likely to succeed.

Leadership is about people, and if you want to become an effective leader, you must draw others into an active commitment to the team’s effort and build a spirit of positive relationships while creating a sense of purpose throughout the entire company.
