Bring Out The Best In Others

A newly appointed CEO gathered with his executive team to explore strategies for the company’s growth. One of his direct reports passionately outlined some ideas for increasing market share over the next five years. The CEO listened intently, but inside, he felt a wave of confusion wash over him as he struggled to grasp his manager’s suggestion fully. He pondered, “Should I ask for clarification? But what if that exposes my lack of understanding and makes me seem incompetent?”

Many individuals in leadership positions often believe that being an effective leader requires them to be the most knowledgeable and skilled person within their organization. They fear that if they don’t have all the answers or expertise in every relevant area, it could signal to their staff that they are not competent or capable of fulfilling their role effectively. This perception can lead to a mentality where leaders feel they must constantly prove their intelligence and skills, which can be both stressful and isolating.

In my new book, Leadership First: 20 Must-Read Articles On Leadership, we delve deeper into this widespread notion that many people hold—that an ideal leader should possess a comprehensive set of skills, characteristics, and abilities to address any problem, challenge, or opportunity that arises. This perspective overlooks the truth that leadership is not about individual brilliance; it’s about creating a collaborative environment where diverse talents and viewpoints contribute to collective success.

Embracing vulnerability, seeking assistance, and valuing your team’s contributions can ultimately lead to a more supportive and effective leadership approach, allowing leaders to navigate complexities with the help of their teams. This shift in perspective can alleviate some of the pressure on leaders and empower those around them to thrive and grow.
